One of the reasons, albeit, a smaller reason we chose Costa Rica was for the summer-type weather year round. It's not very hot in San Jose, it's pleasantly warm, and the sun shines every day. It's truly a wonderful gift. We appreciate it after 3 years in Portland, and 2 long months of the rainy season here in San Jose. I have to say, I do wish Kira was here to lay in the sun, as it is her favorite pass-times. But she is probably doing that in LA at Patricia's ranch.

2 es el numero...
Myles turned 2 on Saturday. Over the past week everything has seemed to happen in 2's. This week started with a high fever for 2 days. But as parents of an almost-2 year old, we handled that with ease.
Then it got a little more difficult . Friday he fell and landed on his face. Lots of blood, and no real clear view into his mouth we asked our neighbors for help. They rushed us to their local pediatric dentist. With three adults holding him down, the dentist was able to determine he has 2 chipped teeth. None were loose and we'll have to wait and see if there is any major damage with time.
I spent 2 days making him an Elmo cake. You might say it was a week long process of planning, but 2 days of making and creating.
Saturday- HIS BIRTHDAY- was finally here. The cake was made and neighbors were ready for a 5pm celebration. Morgan took him outside to play with the other kids while I got the last details ready. And then... He fell again. This time he hit the side of his face. The side of his left eye was split wide open. Much more blood this time, and a sense of a more serious problem than the day before, so we headed back into our neighbors car for the Doctor. Thankfully this wonderful doctor agreed to meet us at her office (on her day off) to see Myles. She carefully examined, cleaned and put in 2 stitches. Oh it was awful.
Yesterday we finally got to sing him Happy Birthday, he opened some gifts, and we all ate the Elmo cake. That is, all... but Myles who refused to eat Elmo. Oh well... can't win 'em all.
Happy Birthday Song
Happy Birthday Myles. You are growing in quite the wonderful little boy. We're lucky to have you in our lives and we cherish every moment... even the stressful ones. Much love!

Manzanillo Costa Rica to Changuinola Panama
Our New Years trip started on the 2nd. We rented a car and headed to the Caribbean coast, the Province of Limon, in the town of Manzanillo. Manzinillo sits south of Purto Viejo which is a more populated and tourist destination.
We rented a little "house" on the edge of the National Park. The living room and kitchen was an outdoor space, while the bedrooms had doors and mosquito netting over the beds. They even had a netting for Myles' pack-in-play, for which were very thankful! The showers had hot water AND pressure at the same time. It was a nice change of pace. But I think it's fair to say outdoor living is not for me. I was glad to get back to my bug-free environment.
The bugs and wildlife in Manzanillo are no joke. The mosquito bite, the birds make a lot of noise, the monkey are out too. And to top it off, there is no stopping the massive amount of fruit flies and other bugs that are attracted to the food.
On the second day we hit the road early in the morning to complete a boarder crossing to renew our Visas. Unfortunately, this didn't go as smooth as we hoped. There were long lines, it was hot... not too hot thankfully, and we were not aware of the bribing policies. So we walked away with only 60 days, and a few other problem. There were all quickly resolved the next morning, but it didn't go without a little stress.
The interesting part of the trip for me was the actual boarder crossing. I asked Nanc when we got out of the car, "Aren't you glad you have a son that creates opportunities like this for you?" And while in the moment it was stressful, and I wasn't so happy we had to lug Myles through it all, I'm defiantly glad that I have a husband who creates opportunities like this for me. And I have to say, I play a role in it too.
So we crossed the Sixaola bridge. It is well over 100 years old. People cross the bridge all day. they also allow motorcycles, cars, buses, and even semi trucks to use it too. They only let one vehicle at a time cross because they think the stress of more than one might cause it to collapse. It was quite a site to see a huge Semi - pretty much the same width as the bridge cross at 2 miles per hour. We noticed they are in the process of building a new bridge.

All-in-all, the trip was a great success. We checked out the Caribbean Coast, got to see some great landscape on our way there, renewed our visas, and spent some time at the beach.
I have to say, Myles has become quite the little traveler. He did really well with all the time spent in the car and in lines waiting for Visa stuff to get sorted. The lady in front of us said, "I'm amazed at how well he's handling this." And to thank him for all his patience, he got some beach time in. Which I think is officially his favorite thing to do.

Feliz Año Nuevo 2012!
FIREWORKS!
This is the way to celebrate holidays here in Costa Rica. (We experienced that too in Nicaragua.)
Minutes before the clock stroke Midnight there were fireworks going off all around us. As soon as the New Year hit, there was a burst of fireworks in the air. It continued for over an hour.
San Jose sits in the Valley, and we are a rare house that is 2 stories high, so we have views of the valley from almost all sides of our apartment. Nanc, Morgan and I watched in aw. It was so cool to see Fireworks ALL over the valley continuously go off.
